In 2021, with the support of the Riga City Council Welfare Department, SOCINTEGRA implemented the project “I see no barriers,” which introduced an unprecedented solution in Latvia — an interactive tactile map of Riga for people with visual impairments.
The map, created under the guidance of SOCINTEGRA
specialists, combines a touchscreen monitor with a transparent tactile overlay.
This innovation allows users to explore the city both visually and through
touch. A double tap on any street plays back its name, providing information
about more than 170 streets, rivers, lakes, and parks. It represents a
significant step toward a more accessible urban environment.
To complement the digital version, SOCINTEGRA also
produced 20 tactile paper maps printed on special relief paper, enabling users
to read them by touch without the use of technology. These solutions ensure
orientation options both digitally and physically.
All materials were integrated into practical training
sessions organized by SOCINTEGRA in collaboration with an experienced
rehabilitation specialist. Feedback gathered during these sessions helped both
beginners and advanced users improve their orientation skills and provided
valuable insights for future development.
The “No Barriers” project highlights SOCINTEGRA’s
leadership in accessibility innovation in Latvia. The developed maps remain
available for use at the SOCINTEGRA office in Riga, Jugla, Strazdumuižas Street
80–207 (visits by appointment).
